According to Statcounter data, Windows 11’s market share fell 0.64 percent to 34.94 percent in November. This is the first time Microsoft’s current operating system has seen a decline after months of steady growth. Windows 10’s market share rose 0.88 percent to 61.83 percent.
Why did the number of Windows 11 users fall?
Between November 2023 and November 2024, Windows 11 saw significant growth of 8 percent, increasing its market share from 26.63 percent to 34.94 percent. However, this growth came at the expense of Windows 10, whose market share fell from 68.02 percent to 61.83 percent in the same period. So Windows 10 suffered a loss of 6 percent.
The decline in Windows 11’s market share is thought to be related to the staggered rollout of the operating system and Microsoft’s policy of supporting only two versions of Windows at a time. Just over ten months after the end of support for Windows 10, Microsoft explains the benefits of upgrading Windows 10 users to Windows 11 and Copilot+ PCs.
- Windows 10: 61.83 percent (+0.88 points)
- Windows 11: 34.94 percent (-0.64 points)
- Windows 7: 2.47 percent (-0.15 percentage points)
- Windows 8.1: 0.31 percent (no change)
- Windows XP: 0.25 percent (-0.03 percentage points)
For users who have not yet upgraded, Microsoft will also offer the option to purchase an additional year of security updates for Windows 10. The cost of this additional service is set at 30 dollars.
As the transition to Windows 11 continues, we will see how market share dynamics will evolve in the coming months, especially as the end of Windows 10 support approaches.
