Stellantis announced that they are working for exhaust systems in electric vehicles.Accordingly, they said that they have found a new, out of the ordinary, usage area.
This approach, which the company has patented, aims to use the exhaust system not for sound or style, but purely for safety.
Exhaust system for electric vehicles from Stellantis
Until now, the concept of ‘exhaust system’ in electric vehicles has been limited to speaker systems that produce artificial engine sounds that we hear in models such as the Dodge Charger Daytona. However, Stellantis has taken this concept to a new dimension and turned the exhaust into a safety feature.
The company’s innovation is based on a dangerous condition called thermal runaway, which can occur in electric vehicle batteries. When the battery fails, a dangerous mixture of flammable gases such as hydrogen, methane, acetylene and propane can be released. This brings the risk of fire.
Stellantis’ patented solution activates a special “electric vehicle exhaust system” that directs these risky gases outside the battery pack. But the innovation does not end there. The system also includes a purification zone that chemically cleans the gases before they are released into the atmosphere, similar to internal combustion vehicles.
This approach not only reduces the risk of fire, but also addresses environmental concerns by ensuring the safe disposal of toxic gases. As the electric vehicle market continues to grow, Stellantis’ patented solution could pave the way for improved safety measures.
