WhatsApp is the most popular messaging app today. However, the privacy-oriented Telegram has been growing rapidly in recent years. Addressing this issue, Telegram Founder Pavel Durov said that the application will reach 1 billion people.
Telegram counts days for 1 billion monthly active users
According to Telegram Founder Pavel Durov, the app will have 1 billion monthly active users within the next year. Noting that WhatsApp in particular has security issues, Durov said the app has turned into a “firehose”.
In an interview this week, Durov discussed the growth of Telegram. The platform currently has about 900 million active users. However, he stated that the number of active users will reach 1 billion people by next year.
Currently, the most popular messaging platforms include WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger, with more than 2 billion users. But Telegram has gained popularity in recent years by positioning itself as a privacy-focused alternative. It offers end-to-end encryption for messages and supports a wide range of devices.
The company also hopes to further monetize the platform. In addition to its Premium subscription service, Durov said Telegram is eyeing the US stock market for its growth. However, Durov noted that Telegram will continue to remain politically neutral.
Telegram recently added custom stickers to the app. It also plans to provide a major update in the coming weeks that will bring more than 16 features.
