Apple has begun preparations to bring the facial recognition technology familiar to iPhone users to the Mac world. According to reliable sources, the company plans to offer Face ID for Macs in future models. However, it appears users will have to be a bit more patient to get this new feature.
When will Face ID for Macs be released?
According to a report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is determined to integrate this technology into Macs. However, there are significant technological hurdles to this integration. Most importantly, Apple’s goal of placing the feature directly under the display slows down the process somewhat. Therefore, the feature is expected to arrive within a few years.

Apple’s ultimate goal is to offer an all-screen experience by hiding both the camera and Face ID sensors under the display. This approach would eliminate the display notch entirely. Furthermore, the fact that a laptop screen is much thinner than an iPhone makes it technically challenging to place the sensors without compromising image quality.
Priority for iPhone and iPad models
Industry expectations suggest that under-display Face ID technology will be first used in future iPhone models. After the technology matures on mobile devices, it’s planned to be rolled out to iPads and finally the Mac family. Therefore, Mac users’ experience with this innovation will depend primarily on its success on mobile devices.
