Meta; has revised its policy on tagging AI-generated images on Facebook and Instagram in response to complaints from photographers. The company acknowledged that the existing tags did not always align with user expectations and did not provide sufficient context. Consequently, Meta announced a new labeling system, replacing ‘AI-Generated’ with ‘AI Information’.
In the new approach, AI-generated content will not be removed but will be tagged more effectively to clearly inform users that the content was created by artificial intelligence.
Facebook is entering a new era concerning AI and copyright
The reason for this change, as explained by Facebook, is that images not created by AI were mistakenly tagged as such, damaging the reputations of photographers. It was noted that incorrect tagging could lead to serious issues, especially in sensitive matters like copyright infringement.
Meta stated that they would employ next-generation algorithms to detect AI-generated images in the new tagging system. However, the effectiveness of these algorithms and whether incorrect tagging can be completely avoided remains uncertain.
Photographers and visual content creators generally view this change positively but argue that more comprehensive measures are needed to fully address the issue. With the rapid development of AI technologies, similar problems are likely to arise in the future, and platforms must keep pace with these advancements.
Meta’s move has reignited debates about tagging AI-generated content. The transparency, accuracy, and impact of tagging on user experience remain critical topics for both content creators and platforms.
