It is well-known that Facebook has lost its appeal among young people, and Meta is aware of this. Meta has not given up on its efforts to make the Facebook app popular among young people again. The company has entered a major transformation process to win back the youth. So, will the young people who have distanced themselves from Facebook return?
Can Meta make Facebook popular among young people again?
Tom Alison, the person responsible for the Facebook app at Meta, announced on the official blog that significant changes would be made to the platform aimed at young people. Alison said, “Facebook still appeals to everyone, but we made significant changes by targeting young adults to build the new generation of social media consumers.”
The main reason behind these efforts is Meta’s attempt to compete with TikTok. TikTok has become so popular among young people that it’s hard to catch up. About three years ago, Mark Zuckerberg said that young people should be the company’s “North Star.” Now, the goal is to transform the Facebook app from a feed based on user connections to one focused on discovering new content.
Alison stated that thanks to advances in artificial intelligence, Reels and main feed recommendations have already been improved. He also mentioned that more products would be supported with advanced recommendation technology next year. He added that private sharing and video calls have also increased.
In April, Meta introduced a new full-screen vertical player for Facebook. This feature allows Reels, live videos, and other content to be viewed in a TikTok-like full-screen vertical format. With these innovations, Meta hopes to regain young users.
So, will Meta be able to attract young people back to Facebook with these changes? Because it looks like it will be quite a challenging battle. Whether these innovations to attract and retain young people’s interest will be successful remains to be seen. What do you think? Will Facebook become popular among young people again?
