YouTube, the world’s largest video-sharing platform owned by Google, has made updates to its platform policies. As part of this, the company announced that it will be removing videos containing misinformation related to medical treatments. Here are the details of the news:
YouTube is removing videos containing misinformation about cancer treatment!
In recent years, YouTube has been grappling with false content. Last year, the company took steps to prevent deceptive content from going viral, i.e., spreading further, before it gained momentum. Now, the platform is taking action against videos that contain misleading medical information.
In a recent blog post on its official website, the company announced that videos discussing harmful or ineffective methods of cancer treatment will be completely removed from the platform.
The YouTube Music app has introduced a new feature called "Samples," which will provide users with song recommendations.
Furthermore, YouTube stated that videos attempting to discourage people from seeking legitimate medical treatment will also be deleted. This means that misleading videos such as “garlic cures cancer,” which have become quite common in Turkey, will no longer be present on the platform.
YouTube has announced that it has started removing the aforementioned videos from today. The total number of videos that will be affected is unknown, but considering its global reach, it is evident that it will be in the thousands.
In fact, this decision isn’t YouTube’s first step against misinformation related to medical matters. The company had taken action against videos related to the worldwide Covid-19 pandemic in the past years as well. Many videos were removed as part of this effort.
