As competition intensifies in the European market, American giant Ford has signed a strategic partnership with French manufacturer Renault to produce affordable electric models. Ford, particularly keen to compete with affordable models from Chinese brands, aims to regain its market share with this move.
Ford Affordable Electric Plans and Details
According to the agreement signed between the two automotive giants, two new Ford-branded electric models will be built on Renault’s “Ampere” platform. These new vehicles will roll off the assembly line at Renault’s production facilities in France, but their design and driving dynamics will be entirely crafted by Ford engineers. Thus, despite their similar underpinnings, the vehicles will retain their Ford DNA.

The first product of the partnership, the model, is expected to hit European showrooms in early 2028. Ford previously produced the Explorer and Capri models on the MEB platform in its partnership with Volkswagen. However, as this platform proved costly for small-scale vehicles, the company shifted its focus to Renault’s more compact and economical solutions.
This new project will fill the gap left by the discontinuation of Ford’s legendary Fiesta model. The company aims to strengthen its presence in the B segment with these new electric vehicles. Furthermore, the parties signed a letter of understanding to evaluate joint production options in the passenger car and commercial vehicle markets.
