According to reports from Chinese and American local media, Linwei Ding, also known as Leon Ding, was tried for 4 separate charges in California and was arrested last Wednesday. For a long time, the Chinese media has been buzzing with reports that Ding had highly confidential artificial intelligence data belonging to Google.

The data he is being charged with stealing allegedly contained secret information about the infrastructure of the supercomputing data centers used by Google to host and train large artificial intelligence models. While allegations suggest that 500 different secret files were stolen, Google has initiated a comprehensive investigation into the stolen data. The Chinese national Leon Ding, who was arrested on Wednesday, was hired by Google in 2019. Among his primary duties and responsibilities was the development of the aforementioned artificial intelligence model. According to Google’s statement, Leon Ding began transferring the mentioned confidential files to his personal Google account starting from 2022.

However, the data breach did not stop there. It was reported that he also had connections with a Chinese technology firm called Beijing Rongshu Lianzhi Technology. In addition to offering him a substantial salary to become the chief technology officer, the company also stated that he had opened his own company.
