OpenAI’s former chief technology officer, Mira Murati, announced that Thinking Machines Lab, which she founded, will launch its first AI product within the next few months. The company has received a new $2 billion investment for this product, which has yet to be released.
Mira Murati presents a new project
Murati left her position following a management crisis at OpenAI in 2023. After staying out of the public eye for about a year following her departure, Murati broke her silence with the establishment of Thinking Machines Lab. The type of technology the company would develop and how it would impact competition in the AI field had long been debated. Today, a clear statement was added to these discussions.

The product developed by Thinking Machines Lab is described as a tool that allows researchers and companies to create artificial intelligence models customized to their own needs. It is stated that the product will be partially, but not completely, open source. Murati believes this approach will increase flexibility and collaboration in development processes.
In a post on the social media platform X, Murati emphasized that the developed system has multimodal features. The system offers an AI experience that can converse with the user, understand visual input, and collaborate on this data in multiple ways. Murati described this system as “an AI that takes natural interaction patterns into account.”
Alexander Kirillov, one of the people working on this project at Thinking Machines Lab, describes the technology as “the world’s most ambitious multimodal AI program.” While the product name or full technical specifications have not yet been released, the descriptions suggest that work is underway on a system capable of processing different types of data, including text, images, and perhaps audio.
The timing of the announcement also attracted attention. At a time when OpenAI has delayed announcing its own open model, Thinking Machines Lab’s emergence with such a product could shift the balance of power in the industry. Murati’s announcement, made just a few days after OpenAI announced its postponement, sparked mixed reviews in the tech world.
Mira Murati, with her background at OpenAI, is a long-known and well-known figure in the AI community. During his time as CTO, he was involved in the company’s biggest projects, including GPT-4. Even before his new company’s first product hits the market, it’s being closely watched by investors and industry professionals.
