Co-founders Devan Plantamura and Alex Tseng, both with extensive experience in defense startups, established Ares Industries in May 2024. Their mission: to develop anti-ship cruise missiles that are ten times smaller and cheaper than current models. This innovation in Hypersonic Missiles could significantly enhance the U.S. military’s missile production capabilities.
Y Combinator (YC), renowned for nurturing software giants like Airbnb and Reddit, has made its inaugural investment in the weapons industry by backing Ares Industries. YC partner Jared Friedman emphasized the strategic importance of this venture, especially considering potential conflicts in regions like the Taiwan Strait. He noted that in such scenarios, the U.S. could exhaust its missile stockpiles within days, underscoring the need for rapid and cost-effective missile production.
Challenging defense titans like Lockheed Martin and Raytheon

Drawing parallels to SpaceX’s disruption of the rocket industry, Friedman envisions Ares Industries challenging defense titans like Lockheed Martin and Raytheon for Hypersonic Missiles production. He highlighted that, similar to the pre-SpaceX era of space launches, the current missile market suffers from bloated costs due to longstanding duopolies.
Hypersonic Missiles from inception to flight testing
Demonstrating remarkable progress, Ares Industries transitioned from inception to flight testing within just 11 weeks. The company plans to deliver functional missile systems to its initial customers by mid-2025, signaling a swift trajectory toward operational readiness.
This development comes as the U.S. intensifies its focus on hypersonic weapons—missiles capable of exceeding speeds of Mach 5. The AGM-183A Air-launched Rapid Response Weapon (ARRW), developed by Lockheed Martin, represents one such effort. However, challenges have arisen, including a recent test where the missile failed to detach from the B-52H bomber during launch.
Ares Industries’ innovative approach could address these challenges by offering more efficient and cost-effective solutions. As global military powers race to advance hypersonic technology, the emergence of agile startups like Ares Industries may redefine the future landscape of defense capabilities.
