The rapid advancement in artificial intelligence and robotic technologies is opening the doors to a new era in the field of defense. Following the US and China, France has also begun taking concrete steps to establish its own robot army.
France may establish its own robot army
France’s goal in this area is not new. The concept of a robot army was first brought to the agenda in the country in 2021, and it was planned to establish a comprehensive robotic military force by 2040. However, according to General Bruno Baratz, who is on duty in the French Army, it is possible to achieve this goal much earlier than expected.

Different types of robots are being tested in tests carried out at military bases in France. These include humanoid robots, wheeled machines and drone-shaped systems. It was stated that the robots will initially be used in areas such as reconnaissance missions, mine clearance and technical repair.
However, the evaluations of artificial intelligence experts reveal that it is inevitable for these systems to take part in direct conflicts. Another general in the French Army, Tony Maffeis, said, “We need to prove that robots can be more effective when they come into contact with an enemy. Robots should facilitate warfare, not hinder it.”
France’s robot army plan has once again brought global interest in autonomous weapons systems to the agenda. This development shows that autonomous and artificial intelligence-supported systems that minimize the human factor on the battlefield will increasingly find a place in the coming period.
