Samsung’s Galaxy Z TriFold, the first foldable phone to make a big splash in the technology world, has passed its eagerly awaited durability test. In a live broadcast by South Korea-based Omokgyo Electronics Shopping Mall, the device was continuously folded and unfolded until it completely failed.

Samsung had stated that this model was designed to withstand 200,000 folds, equivalent to a five-year lifespan. However, in manual tests, the device’s hinge resistance fell short of the target, giving up at approximately the 144,000th fold. After this point, the phone’s hinges lost their flexibility and struggled to stay stable in the open position.
Shiftdelete.netThe testing process revealed that the two different hinge structures differed in terms of durability. The first hinge mechanism began to creak at the 61,000th fold, while the second hinge remained silent until the 121,000th fold.
While noticeable wear and tear was observed in the mechanical components upon reaching the 144,000 fold mark, the most striking result came from the screen. The massive, two-point foldable screen continued to function flawlessly throughout the test, exhibiting no image distortion, touch loss, or pixel errors.
Although the 144,000 folds achieved falls short of Samsung’s theoretical promise, experts point out that this could be due to testing conditions. The possibility that the tracking sensors placed on the screen added extra load to the hinges is causing the result to deviate from a real-world usage scenario.
Furthermore, compared to the Galaxy Z Fold 7’s body structure, which can withstand up to 500,000 folds, it becomes clear that the tri-fold form factor is still in its development phase. This test proves that the Galaxy Z TriFold has renewed confidence in its screen technology, but its complex hinge structure still needs improvement.
