Garanti BBVA Provides Sustainability-Linked Loan to Vezirhan Cimento

Garanti BBVA grants a Sustainability-Linked Loan to Vezirhan Cimento, financing green modernization and low-carbon infrastructure projects in the industrial sector.

Garanti BBVA has officially partnered with Vezirhan Cimento Madencilik Sanayi ve Ticaret A.Ş. to accelerate the heavy industry’s green transition through a strategic Sustainability-Linked Loan (SLL). This financial agreement, announced recently, focuses on financing low-carbon modernization projects at the company’s production facilities. By linking the cost of capital directly to measurable environmental performance targets, Garanti BBVA aims to incentivize industrial carbon reduction. This initiative serves as a crucial step for the firm to align its operations with global sustainability standards while modernizing its core manufacturing technologies to meet the demands of a changing regulatory landscape in the industrial sector.

    • Garanti BBVA funds Vezirhan Cimento’s modernization through a Sustainability-Linked Loan model.
    • The investment targets energy efficiency and the implementation of waste heat recovery systems.
    • The project incorporates alternative fuel infrastructure to reduce fossil fuel dependency in production.
    • Garanti BBVA provides technical advisory services alongside financial support for long-term decarbonization.

Critical Infrastructure Upgrades are Being Implemented

The financing package is specifically designed to support three major technological upgrades that will significantly lower the facility’s carbon footprint. A central component of this investment is the installation of a Waste Heat Recovery (WHR) system. This technology captures excess heat generated during the production process and converts it into usable electricity and thermal energy, allowing the factory to optimize its energy consumption substantially.

Furthermore, the company is deploying a Solid Waste Preparation and Incineration (ATY) infrastructure. By processing industrial and municipal solid waste into alternative fuels, the facility reduces its reliance on traditional coal-based energy sources. This transition not only aids in regional waste management efforts but also directly lowers the factory’s scope 1 emission levels, contributing to a more sustainable production lifecycle.

Modernization Efforts are Enhancing Operational Efficiency

In addition to waste and heat systems, the capital injection funds the integration of a new-generation cement mill. This advanced machinery is engineered to decrease the electricity required per unit of clinker ground, which represents a major improvement in operational efficiency. Such technical advancements are essential for heavy industries aiming to maintain competitiveness while adhering to increasingly stringent environmental regulations.

Comprehensive Technical Guidance is Being Provided

Beyond capital provision, Garanti BBVA is offering specialized technical consultancy to Vezirhan Cimento. Experts from the bank are working closely with the company to develop a comprehensive, long-term decarbonization roadmap. This process involves identifying high-priority green transition steps and conducting rigorous assessments of potential financial risks stemming from global climate regulations. Hakan Birhan, Director of Investment Banking and Finance at Garanti BBVA, stated that when the impact and measurement of investments are clearly defined, constructing the appropriate financial structure becomes feasible. The bank continues to prioritize projects that facilitate Turkey’s transition to a low-carbon economy, particularly as it prepares for its role as a Global Banking Partner at COP31.

Sustainable Finance Targets are Being Pursued

International regulations, such as the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), have made the adoption of low-carbon infrastructure a necessity for export-oriented sectors like cement and steel. Garanti BBVA remains committed to its 3.5 trillion TL sustainable finance goal for the 2018–2029 period. By utilizing performance-linked loan models, the bank continues to support real sector representatives in their efforts to modernize their production facilities and meet international environmental standards.
