Recent industry reports point to two giants in the gaming world. It appears that PlayStation and Xbox, despite all the controversy, have begun using AI technologies in game development. While this has sparked concerns among gamers, studios are turning to these technologies to reduce costs and increase efficiency.
Is the era of AI dawning in game development?
The use of generative AI is rapidly increasing in the gaming industry. It’s reported that one in five games on Steam uses this technology. However, major players haven’t publicly acknowledged this issue for fear of backlash. Now, significant developments are underway on both Sony and Microsoft’s side.

According to reports, Dark Outlaw Games, one of Sony’s newly established first-party studios, has posted a job posting. The posting is seeking a concept artist experienced in generative AI tools like Midjourney and ChatGPT. This suggests PlayStation is preparing to integrate the technology into its games.
A similar situation is unfolding on Xbox’s side. Industry insiders claim that Xbox has already incorporated AI into the workflow of its Halo studios. This technology is reportedly being used to enhance the world-building and artistic aspects of new Halo games. Tight deadlines also appear to have influenced this decision.
A large portion of gamers are concerned that AI will reduce the quality of AAA games. However, many developers describe these tools as “useful” and “hard to resist.” A Battlefield 6 executive even described the technology as “tempting.” Microsoft’s billions of dollars invested in AI suggests this process will accelerate further.
