Google has introduced a new feature that makes Gmail users’ email responses smarter and more personalized. With the update announced by the company at the I/O 2025 event, Gmail’s “smart replies” feature will now scan not only the relevant email thread, but also sources such as the user’s Gmail inbox and Google Drive documents.
Gmail comes with new artificial intelligence features
The new system is powered by Google’s artificial intelligence model Gemini. Gemini is not limited to short phrases when creating email responses; it can also suggest longer and more meaningful texts.

This new feature, built on the “contextual reply” system launched last year, can create automatic responses based on accurate information without the need to read long email threads on behalf of the user.
According to Google manager Blake Barnes, the system can personalize not only the content but also the tone and style. For example, if the user is corresponding with a manager, more formal response suggestions can be offered, and if the user is talking with a friend, more friendly response suggestions can be offered.
The new generation of smart replies will begin testing in alpha via Google Labs in July. The feature, which will initially be available only in English on the web, iOS, and Android platforms, will be available to the general public in the third quarter of 2025, when it is included in paid Workspace plans and Google One AI Premium subscriptions.
Google also announced some other innovations for Gmail. One of the most notable of these is the Gemini-powered “inbox cleanup” feature. This feature can be used to automatically delete all unread emails from a specific sender, for example.
Another innovation is that Gemini will offer calendar-based time suggestions when users want to set up a meeting. Both of these new functions will be available to the general public in the third quarter.
