Smartphones often come with numerous applications that we seldom use, taking up significant storage space on our devices. Sometimes, we are forced to delete these applications due to storage constraints. However, when we need these apps again, we have to reinstall them. To address this issue, Google has introduced a new solution for Android users experiencing storage problems.
Automatic app archiving feature saves up to 60% storage space
Google has begun rolling out an automatic app archiving feature for Android devices, which allows for extra storage space without fully uninstalling applications. According to Google, the automatic archiving feature can reduce the storage space occupied by applications by approximately 60% without completely removing the app and the user’s data from the device.
Archived applications can be distinguished by a cloud icon placed over the app icon. These apps can be re-downloaded and reinstalled from Google Play, provided they are still available. This new feature can be particularly useful for users who do not want to completely delete applications on Android devices that do not offer expandable storage options.
The new Android feature will appear when users try to install a new application on a device that has run out of storage space. When the feature is enabled, all unused applications will be archived, freeing up space on the device. Users can also customize which apps should be archived or not.
Apple had previously introduced the “Offload Unused Apps” feature with iOS 11. Similarly, this feature removes seldom-used apps from iPhones while preserving their data, allowing users to return to the application whenever they want.
Google aims to provide some relief for phone owners with low storage capacity through the new automatic app archiving feature. What are your thoughts on storage issues and the automatic archiving feature? Feel free to share your opinions in the comments section below.
