Google has added a new one to its models in the field of artificial intelligence. The tech giant introduced the new MedLM artificial intelligence model designed specifically for healthcare applications. MedLM is based on Med-PaLM 2, which Google claims performs at the level of an expert doctor.
How does Google AI MedLM work?
The new MedLM tool is available to select Google Cloud customers via the Vertex AI platform. The tech giant said that some healthcare companies, such as HCA Healthcare and BenchSci, have conducted tests on their patients. It assists doctors in tasks such as preparing patient notes and identifying medical research.
It was stated that MedLM consists of two models, large and small. It was stated that the large MedLM can analyze patient records and perform complex tasks in the entire health system. The medium-sized model will offer real-time solutions such as summarizing doctor-patient interactions.
Experts believe it would be risky to use artificial intelligence in healthcare without extensive testing and security measures. While Google claims to be taking a cautious approach, the general availability of medical chatbots is dangerous.
There are concerns that AI apps could give harmful diagnostic advice, spread medical misinformation or inadvertently leak private health records. The World Health Organization has said that untested systems could lead to errors and undermine trust in AI.
Aashima Gupta, Head of Health Strategy at Google Cloud, said that building models of different sizes is important in patient-doctor analysis. Instead of a one-size-fits-all solution, she thinks it can revolutionize the health sector with different approaches.
