Google’s Gemini artificial intelligence service started attracting significant attention shortly after its launch, especially for its realistic features in generating human images. However, criticisms emerged on social media claiming that Gemini’s AI misinterpreted commands and exhibited racist tendencies.
Could Google Gemini’s visual creation service be racist?
Google acknowledged the criticisms of racism directed at its Gemini human image generation service in its initial statement today. Subsequently, Google decided to temporarily suspend the human image generation category in the Gemini visual service.
Google’s Gemini artificial intelligence service has been facing significant criticisms on social media since yesterday. According to reports, Google’s AI visual creation service makes errors bordering on racism, especially concerning human faces. Interestingly, this racism is directed not towards black individuals but towards white individuals.
For example, when a user instructed Gemini to create images of people born in Scotland in the 1820s, the results were surprisingly different.
Another command given to Gemini was to create images of Vikings. However, as seen below, Gemini generated all images as Black, Asian, and Native American, not Scandinavian.
Following the increasing criticisms, Google announced through X that it would temporarily suspend the human image generation service with Gemini. It’s yet unknown when the service will resume.
Although no timeframe was provided in the announcement, Google seems poised to make significant updates to Gemini’s visual creation service. Google had previously acknowledged that the service had made errors in generating human images.
The reason for the problem with Google Gemini remains unknown. However, on social media, there are criticisms that Google Gemini is overly politically correct. In this regard, Google seems to have overdone it in trying to prevent racism.
