Google seems to be making an important change in the Pixel series and abandoning Qualcomm’s Snapdragon modems.Accordingly, the company is preparing to use MediaTek’s new 5G modem in the Pixel 10 series. This decision comes after problems with Snapdragon modems used in previous Pixel devices.
Google opts for MediaTek modem for Pixel 10
The Pixel 6, Google’s first phone to use its in-house-designed Tensor chip, faced many problems such as overheating and poor signal performance due to the integrated modem. While the tech giant made incremental improvements in subsequent Tensor generations, modem performance remained a pain point.
The company even internally admitted that the modem was one of the main reasons for Pixel phone returns. Accordingly, it evaluated the Snapdragon X75 modem for the Pixel 10. Ultimately, however, it opted for MediaTek’s yet-to-be-released T900 modem based on the M85 5G platform.
The T900 is expected to support the latest 3GPP Release 17 5G specifications, the details of which are not yet fully disclosed. While the performance of the new modem is not yet known, it seems to be able to solve the long-standing modem problems of the Pixel series.
