Google is taking its users back to the old Android days with a small but nostalgic color change in its popular mapping application Google Maps. With the update, the bright blue accents we have been used to for a long time in Google Maps have been replaced by aqua green tones. Here are the details of the new update…
A nostalgic touch to the Google Maps interface: Lollipop and Marshmellow style are coming
The new color coming with the update is inspired by the Material Design color palette that Android users frequently encountered during the Lollipop and Marshmallow periods. The aqua green tones used in Nexus devices of brands such as Motorola, Huawei and LG at that time will now give Google Maps users a nostalgic moment.
By the way, Google’s new color change may not have come to all users yet as it is updated through the server. The new color only appears on buttons and prominent interface elements. This gives a lighter feel to the overall layout. It’s also a slight departure from Google’s four classic logo colors (blue, red, yellow and bright green), bringing back Material Design elements of the past, which surprised many users.
In fact, the warm and soft feel of this shade of green on screens will be a welcome change for those who don’t like today’s bright and high-contrast interfaces. But Google has also been criticized for not supporting this color change with more modern features like dynamic themes and Material You design.
Despite the new aqua green accents, the overall look of the app is still static. While UI themes like Material You have been widely used since Android 12, some users are disappointed that Google Maps has not yet fully adapted to these features.
