Google has announced comprehensive AI-powered updates to its Maps app. The company is introducing a number of new features designed to save users time and help them start their trips more prepared, including Gemini-powered tips, trending locations, and predictions for electric vehicle charger availability.
Google Maps introduces new features
When searching for a place like a restaurant or hotel, the Gemini-powered “Know Before You Go” section now appears. This section compiles information from user reviews and other online content, providing users with tips on booking methods, must-try menu recommendations, and parking availability.

The Navigation app’s Explore tab has also been updated. The new tab shows users popular and trending restaurants, activities, and popular sites nearby. Suggestions are easily accessible by swiping up, and lists compiled from trusted sites are displayed.
Electric vehicle owners already see real-time availability at charging stations, but Google Maps takes this information even further. Using AI, the app estimates how many charging stations will be available upon arrival.
Google states that it makes these predictions by analyzing historical and real-time charging station availability data, preventing users from waiting in long lines at charging stations.
Google has also enabled users to leave reviews on the platform using nicknames. Reviews are linked to a Google Account behind the scenes. This system ensures that a user can only post one review for the same business and prevents users from leaving a series of negative reviews by changing their nicknames.
Google is rolling out all new features to Maps simultaneously across all platforms. Gemini-powered hints are now available for iOS users. The updated Explore tab and the option to use nicknames for reviews are coming this month. The charging station prediction feature will initially be limited to Android Auto and vehicles with Google built-in.
