If you’ve ever had navigation vanish mid-drive, Google Maps may finally have a fix, and it’s already in limited testing.
Google Maps quietly rolls out Live Updates on Android

A small group of users has started seeing Google Maps Live Updates on their phones. This feature pins navigation data directly to your screen using Android’s persistent notification system, so your directions don’t disappear when you switch apps.
It’s not widely available yet, but screenshots have emerged from both Pixel and Samsung devices running the Android 16 QPR2 beta.
What Live Updates actually do for navigation
Live Updates act like a smart, always-visible overlay in your notification shade. Instead of vanishing when you check messages or open Spotify, your turn-by-turn instructions stay right where you need them.
Key features include:
- Persistent, glanceable travel progress
- Anchored notifications that stay on screen
- Easy access to route and time info
- Built on Android’s Live Activities framework
This could be especially handy during quick app switches, where losing directions for even a moment is more than a minor annoyance.
Google Maps isn’t rolling this out widely, yet
The feature is currently only visible to a very small test group. Reports first popped up via a user on X, with a few confirmations trickling in over the past several days. This suggests Google is quietly A/B testing on selected devices ahead of a broader release.
Importantly, this isn’t limited to Google’s Canary build. Users running public betas have seen the feature live, though it remains rare.
Why this small change matters for everyday driving
Losing track of directions mid-route is more common than people think. Whether you accidentally swiped Maps away or your phone prioritized a notification, it’s a frustrating issue.
Live Updates aren’t flashy, but they solve a real problem by keeping Google Maps visible when you need it most without interrupting your workflow or music.
No official word, but signs point to expansion
Google hasn’t officially announced Live Updates for Maps yet, but the sightings keep increasing. If all goes well in this test phase, expect a wider release with an upcoming Android update.
Until then, if your phone’s still hiding the feature, don’t worry, you’re not the only one left waiting.
