Google’s highly anticipated new phone series, the Pixel 10, came with Pixelsnap, a magnetic wireless charging system similar to MagSafe. However, it was revealed that not all models in the series support the same wireless charging speed. This has caused consternation in the tech world.

Pixel 10 series has been a disappointment with its wireless charging

The company has limited Qi 2.2, the latest version of the Qi2 wireless charging standard, and 25W fast charging support to the Pixel 10 Pro XL. The other models in the series, the Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, and Pixel 10 Pro Fold, use Qi 2.0.1, which was released in 2023.

While the reason behind this decision hasn’t been fully explained, Google has stated that heat is the primary reason for not offering 25W charging. According to the WPC (Wireless Power Consortium), although Qi 2.2 is an optional feature, it’s interesting that Google hasn’t added this option to other models. While the devices continue to work with the same chargers, this distinction is frustrating for users.

Apple’s latest iPhones also support Qi 2.0.1. This suggests a similar strategy to Google’s strategy of only using this feature in its highest-end devices.

This strategy aims to differentiate Google’s top-tier model from the rest by increasing the appeal of the Pro XL, which has a higher price tag. Just like higher-resolution displays or more powerful cameras, fast wireless charging is now becoming a feature exclusive to premium devices.

This situation highlights the increasing segmentation of the technology market, with companies exploiting every detail to differentiate their flagship models.
