Google has made a significant change in strategy by changing the manufacturer of the Tensor processors it developed for Pixel phones. The company has ended its collaboration with Samsung Foundry for a while and moved chip production to TSMC.
Google Tensor G6 can be produced with 2nm process
In this context, the Pixel 10 series is preparing to be released with the Tensor G5 chipset produced with TSMC’s 3nm N3E process. However, the most striking development is about the Tensor G6 processor that will be used in the Pixel 11 models to be released next year. Google plans to produce this new generation processor with TSMC’s most advanced production technology, the 2nm process.
The meetings that Google executives held with TSMC officials in Taiwan last month show that this plan is not limited to a short-term production change. It is stated that the company aims to deepen its partnership with TSMC for the next three to five years.
The fact that the Tensor G6 will be produced on the 2nm node; Google will have a clear move to technically catch up with its competitors such as Apple, Qualcomm and MediaTek by skipping previous generation production technologies.
TSMC opened its 2nm production line for orders as of April 1, but no official statement has been made about which companies will use this technology. Despite this, it is already generally accepted in technology circles that Apple will produce the A20 chipset during this process.
This situation shows that Google has entered a similar strategic direction. The production of Tensor G6 in 2nm can provide significant gains in terms of performance and energy efficiency. In addition to the advantages of the new production technology, the cost side also draws attention. It is stated that the 2nm process is much more expensive than previous generations.
This factor may require serious budget planning, especially for a company like Google that works with limited volume on the hardware side. The increase in production costs may also be indirectly reflected in device prices.
