Google is taking a new step to improve the security of its services. Accordingly, it will start an account deletion operation at the end of 2023. As part of this operation, accounts that have not been activated for two years will be removed. So what should you do to protect your account?
Google will delete inactive accounts at the end of 2023
Google has announced that it will begin deleting inactive accounts on December 1, 2023. In emails sent over the weekend, the company warned users that accounts that have not been used for two years will be removed.
Google said it would also send several reminder emails in the months leading up to the deletion, giving users a chance to keep their profiles active. However, once an account has been deleted, it will not be possible to create a new Google profile with the same Gmail address.
With this policy, Google wants to reduce the chances of services being hacked through profiles with weak passwords. According to the company, hackers often use abandoned accounts for malicious purposes such as identity theft and spamming.
To prevent your account from being deleted, you should log in to your Google account every two years. Other activities while logged in, such as checking Gmail, using Google Drive or watching videos on YouTube, will also keep the account active.
Google also said that users can download their data with some tools before deleting their profile. With the company’s services such as Takeout and Inactive Account Manager, you can move your account data to a different address.
