Positioned as a direct competitor to AMD’s AFMF technology, Nvidia’s Smooth Motion technology attracted attention by inserting a dummy frame between two rendered frames. This effectively doubles the perceived frame rate without requiring any changes to the game itself. This meant the technology could be used even in thousands of games that didn’t support DLSS Frame Generation. However, this feature was exclusive to the RTX 50 series. Now, it’s been revealed that Smooth Motion will be coming to the Nvidia RTX 40 series.
Nvidia RTX 40 Gets Smooth Motion
This feature, which hasn’t been officially integrated into the NVIDIA App yet, is available for developers to try. A user on the Guru3D forums discovered that Smooth Motion can be manually enabled in the latest preview drivers (version 590.26) using the NVIDIA Profile Inspector. Players are reporting that after performing this action, their FPS in World of Warcraft jumped from 82 to 164, effectively doubling performance with a single setting.

However, players who want to try NVIDIA’s move should proceed with caution. Because the driver is still in preview, instability and bugs are being reported. Experts recommend waiting for the stable release, which will be available to the general public.
It’s also important to note that the FPS increase doesn’t necessarily translate to a direct increase in visual quality. Because Smooth Motion doesn’t utilize an advanced resynchronization technique like DLSS, it can occasionally cause minor visual glitches.
This technology offers an ideal solution for those aiming for maximum frame rates, especially in older games that don’t support DLSS or in CPU-bound scenarios.
Let’s see when this feature, which is still in beta, will officially be released.
