Several names have been considered for one of cinema’s most iconic characters, James Bond, but lately, Henry Cavill seems to be one of the most notable. Until now, the fact that Cavill auditioned for the James Bond role has remained a rumor. However, footage of the actor’s audition for 007 has now surfaced.
Cavill Almost Became James Bond
Cavill’s 2005 audition, particularly from Pierce Brosnan’s era in the GoldenEye film, features the actor delivering classic James Bond lines. He catches attention by ordering the famous “Vodka martini, shaken, not stirred” and the iconic “Bond, James Bond” line. In the seven-minute video, young Cavill is seen playing the scene several times with different interpretations.

The release of Cavill’s audition reminds fans just how close he came to becoming 007. Casino Royale director Martin Campbell described Cavill’s performance as “brilliant” and mentioned that if Daniel Craig hadn’t been cast, Cavill would have made an excellent James Bond.
Campbell explained, “Physically, he was in great shape, very handsome, with sharp facial features. He just looked a bit young at the time.” His age was noted as his biggest disadvantage.
The audition footage was released by the YouTube channel Ron South, revealing not only Cavill’s test but also those of other actors who previously auditioned for Bond, including Avatar star Sam Worthington, The Boys actor Antony Starr, and Pride and Prejudice actor Rupert Friend.
As we all know, the James Bond role ultimately went to Daniel Craig, who played the iconic character in five films. However, many people who have seen Cavill’s audition believe he could have been a great fit for the role of Bond. Do you think Henry Cavill would have made a good 007?
