GitHub is a platform where millions of developers share code and collaborate on projects, and where the heart of the open source software world beats. In this context, the platform’s annual report revealed the list of the most popular programming languages.
Python became the most popular programming language for the first time
For the first time in the platform’s history, Python has overtaken JavaScript to become the most popular programming language, according to GitHub’s annual Octoverse report. This shift is due to the growing demand for AI applications and open-source libraries.
According to the report, there was a significant increase in contributions to AI-related projects compared to last year. Contributions to particularly productive AI projects increased by 59 percent, while contributions to general projects almost doubled. Countries such as India, Germany, Japan and Singapore accounted for a significant portion of this growth on GitHub.
The main force behind the rise of Python seems to be the increasing demand for artificial intelligence and machine learning capabilities. Thanks to the availability of libraries like TensorFlow, Keras and scikit-learn, Python is the preferred choice for many data science and AI projects.
The use of Jupyter Notebooks, a tool widely used in data science studies, has also increased by 92 percent.
JavaScript, TypeScript and Java continue to be among the most popular languages. System languages such as Rust also grew on GitHub. According to the report, Turkey recorded significant growth in the information and communication technologies market.
