With the rapid growth of the artificial intelligence industry, there has been an increasing demand for chips used in this field. While Nvidia leads the sector, Huawei has shifted its investments in this direction. Recent reports indicate that Huawei has opted to produce artificial intelligence chips instead of popular phones like the Mate 60 series.
Huawei will produce artificial intelligence chips instead of the Mate 60
According to sources familiar with the company’s operations, Huawei has prioritized the production of the Ascend 910B artificial intelligence chip. This decision has led to popular phones like the Mate 60 series taking a backseat.
Huawei produces both Ascend AI chips and Kirin chips, which power Mate phones, in a single facility. However, it has been noted that production levels at the facility have declined recently. In response, Huawei has decided to redirect chip production towards the Ascend 910B used in artificial intelligence training.
The demand for Huawei’s Ascend chips has emerged as a result of the tension between the US and China. Chinese artificial intelligence companies are unable to access American technologies, leading them to rely on domestically produced technologies. In this context, Huawei stands out with its Ascend 910B chip.
Through its chip used in artificial intelligence training, Huawei sees itself as a rapidly growing player in China’s artificial intelligence sector. By slowing down the production of the Mate 60 series and prioritizing artificial intelligence, the company believes it will be more beneficial.
For those who may not recall, the Mate 60 series enabled Huawei to surpass Apple’s iPhone dominance in the Chinese market. However, the company sees artificial intelligence at the center of China’s technology goals.
