Huawei has taken an important step in the mobile world and announced HarmonyOS NEXT, a new operating system completely independent from Android. The new operating system, which represents a break from Google’s mobile ecosystem, is an important part of the company’s long-term strategy after the US sanctions.
What does Huawei HarmonyOS Next offer?
Huawei has unveiled HarmonyOS NEXT, its new operating system that is completely independent from Android. Unlike its previous versions, HarmonyOS NEXT is completely free of Google’s mobile operating system and does not support Android apps.
Based on Huawei’s open-source OpenHarmony project, the new operating system offers a revamped interface. It features a more customizable lock screen and a redesigned control center for faster navigation. The home screen layout remains similar to previous versions.
HarmonyOS NEXT also supports Huawei’s self-developed artificial intelligence capabilities to improve performance. These features will be based on the Pangu language model and will be distributed differently according to the device. A new security system called “Star Shield” will protect devices at the operating system level.
Huawei CEO Richard Yu stated that 15 thousand applications and services are currently available for the HarmonyOS ecosystem. HarmonyOS NEXT, which is not compatible with Android applications, will offer an application development kit.
The move to an Android-independent operating system comes after Huawei models faced heavy restrictions due to national security concerns. HarmonyOS NEXT will be an alternative to Android for Huawei to compete in the global smartphone market.
