Huawei has suffered a significant blow in the Chinese AI market. The company, which decided to develop its own chips after the US sanctions, is falling behind due to technical problems it experienced with the Ascend 910C chip, which it launched with great expectations.
Huawei is doing poorly in the Chinese market
The high temperature values of the Ascend 910C in particular limit the use of the chip in large-scale systems. It was reported that the Ascend 910C chip experienced an overheating problem in the tests conducted and that this problem has not yet been resolved.

This situation questions the reliability of the chip in AI applications that require long-term and intensive calculations. On the other hand, the CANN software platform developed by Huawei also does not meet expectations. CANN cannot provide a serious alternative to Nvidia’s CUDA ecosystem, which has been maturing for years.
These technical difficulties experienced by Huawei in hardware and software are disrupting the company’s efforts to strengthen its AI infrastructure with domestic production. ByteDance, Alibaba and Tencent, which are among China’s largest technology companies; It was learned that it did not prefer Ascend-based solutions and that Huawei has not received high-volume orders to date.
Although Nvidia’s chip sales to China have decreased due to US trade restrictions, the reliability of the company’s products and software support are attractive to users. In this case, Huawei needs to both fix the problems at the hardware level and deepen its software ecosystem in order to convince its Chinese customers.
