Huawei has officially announced its long-awaited flagship smartphones, the Mate 80 and Mate 80 Pro. The two models are visually very similar thanks to the shared components, particularly the display and battery. Here are the details of the devices.
8,000-Nit Display and Kirin X Chipsets Coming
Both phones use the same display panel: a 6.75-inch LTPO OLED panel with a 1-120Hz adaptive refresh rate. The display features a 1280×2832 pixel resolution, 1.07 billion colors, and coverage of the entire P3 color gamut. The panel supports 1440Hz PWM dimming and a 300Hz touch sampling rate.

Huawei claims the panel is the brightest ever in a phone, boasting brightness up to 8,000 nits. The protective glass covering the screen is second-generation Kunlun Glass. Both Mate 80 models feature a front-facing 3D ToF facial recognition camera and a side-mounted fingerprint scanner. Satellite communication support is also common across both devices.
The Mate 80 Pro comes with the Kirin 9030 chipset, while the Mate 80 is powered by the Kirin 9020. While details about the chipsets are limited, Huawei claims the Kirin 9030 is 35% faster than the Kirin 9020, and the Kirin 9020 is 35% faster than the Kirin 9010.
The top-of-the-line Mate 80 Pro Max features the Kirin 9030 Pro, which is superior to the Kirin 9030. This Pro Max chip is said to be 42% faster than the Kirin 9020, making it 7% faster than the Kirin 9030 (non-Pro model). While the Mate 80 Pro Max only comes with 16GB of RAM, the Mate 80 and Mate 80 Pro both start with 12GB of RAM and go up to 16GB in their highest-end versions.
Both phones feature a 5,750mAh battery, but the Mate 80 Pro boasts faster charging speeds: 100W wired and 80W wireless. The Mate 80 still offers respectable 66W wired and 50W wireless charging speeds.
Imaging offers both similarities and differences. Both phones feature a triple-camera system on the rear, including a 13MP selfie camera with an f/2.0 autofocus lens.
The Mate 80 includes a 50MP wide-angle camera with a variable aperture (f/1.4-f/4.0) and a 1/1.28-inch RYYB sensor. There’s also a 40MP ultra-wide camera with an f/2.2 lens, and finally, a 12MP 5.5x zoom camera with a 125mm f/3.4 lens.
The Mate 80 Pro features the same wide and ultra-wide cameras, but adds a more advanced telephoto unit. This model features a 48MP sensor, a 4x or 92.5mm telephoto lens, and a much brighter f/2.1 aperture.
Both camera systems are powered by Huawei’s second-generation Red Maple imaging chip, which adjusts processing and color. The Mate 80 series launches with HarmonyOS 6, featuring a new design and a suite of AI capabilities.
