Huawei has accelerated its work on the next-generation flagship Huawei Mate X8. Initial details shared by the industry’s reliable leaker, Digital Chat Station, show that Huawei will push boundaries in both performance and screen dimensions this time around. In particular, the company’s in-house new processor will play a major role at the heart of the device.
A New Era in Performance with Kirin 9040
The most striking feature of the Mate X8 is the use of Huawei’s next-generation Kirin 9040 chipset. As the successor to the Kirin 9030 Pro, this new processor promises significant improvements, especially in Artificial Intelligence (AI) capabilities and energy efficiency. While technical specs aren’t fully finalized, the Kirin 9040 is expected to be much more competitive against rivals like the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5.

Larger Screen, Thinner Design
With the Mate X8, Huawei is increasing the screen size for its “book-type” foldable form factor. According to leaks, the display configuration will be as follows:
- Internal Display: 8.15 inches (up from approx. 8.0 inches in the previous model).
- External Display: 6.5 inches (up from approx. 6.4 inches in the previous model).
Despite this increase in screen size, Huawei’s engineering focus is not on making the device heavier, but rather on thinning it down further. Thanks to a new “ultra-thin” camera module design, the phone aims to offer an ergonomic grip and approach the thickness of a standard smartphone when folded.
Camera and Hardware Beast: The 20 GB RAM Claim
On the camera front, Huawei will feature a massive 50 MP 1/1.3-inch primary sensor in the Mate X8. This sensor could redefine foldable phone standards, particularly in low-light performance and dynamic range.
The most shocking hardware claim concerns the memory. Some sources suggest the Mate X8 may arrive with a special version featuring 20 GB of RAM. At a time when global memory prices are rising, this move indicates Huawei’s desire to solidify its title as the “most powerful foldable phone.” Additionally, the device is expected to ship with HarmonyOS 7, Huawei’s most up-to-date software ecosystem.
When is the Release?
Huawei typically updates its foldable models in the last quarter of the year. however, the early start of leaks strengthens expectations that the Mate X8 could be introduced in the second half of 2026, likely in September or October. The device is anticipated to be the fiercest rival to Samsung’s expected Galaxy Z Fold 8 model.
With 20 GB of RAM and a Kirin 9040 chip, Huawei seems to be ignoring the global DRAM shortage to maintain its technical lead. Do you think 20 GB of RAM provides a tangible benefit for a foldable’s multitasking, or is it purely a marketing play for the “spec wars”? Share your thoughts in the comments!
