Hyundai is officially expanding its footprint in the rugged off-road segment with the upcoming launch of the Hyundai Boulder. Following its debut as a concept vehicle at the New York International Auto Show, the automaker is moving toward full-scale production, as evidenced by recent filings with the Indian Patent Office in May. This highly anticipated vehicle marks a significant milestone for the brand as its first SUV to utilize a traditional ladder-frame chassis, positioning it as a direct competitor to established industry giants like the Ford Bronco and the Jeep Wrangler. Engineering efforts are focused on delivering a serious off-road machine capable of tackling the most demanding terrains.

Design Language Emphasizes Durability

The aesthetic of the Boulder is defined by the brand’s “Art of Steel” philosophy, which prioritizes a rugged and utilitarian appearance. The exterior features a high, flat hood line that contributes to a boxy, aggressive stance. The front fascia is characterized by sleek, rectangular LED headlights complemented by vertical daytime running lights, while the exposed tow hooks integrated into the oversized lower grille signal the model’s adventurous intent.

Substantial, squared-off wheel arches house massive 37-inch all-terrain tires, further reinforcing the vehicle’s dominant presence. Designers have incorporated a steeply raked A-pillar, a stylistic nod to traditional off-road SUVs. At the rear, the vehicle retains classic functional elements such as an externally mounted spare tire and a drop-down tailgate, ensuring it appeals to enthusiasts who value both form and practicality in off-road environments.

Off-Road Capabilities are Engineered for Performance

Beyond its looks, the Hyundai Boulder is designed to excel in challenging conditions. The vehicle will come equipped with a sophisticated four-wheel-drive system featuring front and rear differential locks to maximize traction. The chassis setup includes a robust independent front suspension paired with a solid rear axle, providing the necessary articulation for rock crawling and uneven trails. A standout technical feature is the “tank turn” capability, allowing the vehicle to rotate on its own axis, which is a significant advantage in tight off-road spaces.

Technology Features are Modernized for Drivers

Inside the cabin, the production model will maintain a driver-centric layout featuring a wide, horizontal dashboard. While retaining essential physical buttons for tactile control, the vehicle centers its user experience around a large infotainment display powered by the Pleos Connect architecture. This Android Automotive-based system offers seamless integration of navigation, app downloads, and over-the-air updates. The Gleo AI voice assistant will further enhance convenience, providing hands-free control over various vehicle functions during transit.

Powertrain Options are Offered for Global Markets

Hyundai is developing multiple powertrain configurations to satisfy diverse market demands. The lineup will include a 2.5-liter turbocharged gasoline hybrid producing 330 HP, while a more powerful plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant is expected to deliver 400 HP. International markets may receive a 2.2-liter turbo-diesel engine with 207 HP, while North American teams are currently prioritizing the development of a fully electric version to meet regional emission standards and consumer expectations.
