The recent allegations that Instagram and Facebook have censored some content and suspended accounts have caused great repercussions on social media. In particular, the censorship of a certain word has led to a serious debate among users. So, what is behind Meta’s move and which concept-related posts are being censored?
There is an ‘abortion’ problematic on Instagram and Facebook!
It is stated that the number of content removals and account suspensions on the platform has increased in the last two weeks. Some users say that Instagram and Facebook have blurred or even completely removed posts on a particular topic. Although Meta confirmed that it has restored some accounts and content, allegations of censorship continue.

Meta argues that the censorship of abortion-focused accounts is not related to changes in speech policies. However, the timing of the censorship has raised doubts about whether the company has actually relaxed speech restrictions. The company still appears to face serious challenges in content moderation.
A Meta spokesperson explained that the removal of some abortion pill-related content was based on the platform’s drug sales policies. The company stressed that rules prohibiting the unauthorised sale of medicines must not be violated. However, Meta acknowledged that some posts were removed by mistake, describing the situation as overreaching.
Lawyer Lisa Femia of the Electronic Frontier Foundation noted that social media platforms are becoming increasingly aggressive in removing content related to reproductive health.
In 2022, there was reportedly a large increase in the removal of content related to abortion pills after the US Supreme Court overturned the Roe v. Wade decision. Femia argued that such censorship restricts access to healthcare and poses a serious threat.
Meta’s latest move has once again highlighted the fine line between freedom of expression and content moderation policies. Although the company says it is working to minimise the number of posts accidentally removed on the platform, it is clear that its censorship policies, especially on sensitive topics, still draw serious reactions…
Do you think Meta’s move is part of their content policy or direct censorship? We look forward to your comments!
