Google’s new operating system Android 16 comes with an innovation that will take the camera experience to the next level. This feature, called ‘Night Mode Indicator API’, will help camera and social media applications by detecting low light conditions. This API, which will make the ‘Night Mode’ camera suggestion offered by applications such as Instagram more effective, will recognise that the device is in low light and suggest a suitable mode to the user.
Which devices will get this Android 16 feature?
Android 16’s Night Mode Indicator API will be available on Pixel 6 and later Google phones and next-generation Samsung devices such as the Galaxy Z Flip 6. But that will depend on the camera extensions the phone supports. For example, the app will suggest the Night Mode camera extension when low light is detected on Instagram. These extensions will offer better photos by optimising camera settings according to the light level.
The API will have three different outcomes: Unknown, Off and On. The ‘Unknown’ option will be activated when light conditions cannot be detected, while the ‘Off’ option will indicate that there is no need to use Night Mode when the light is sufficient. However, the user will still be able to switch this mode on manually if they wish. The ‘On’ option will be activated when low light conditions are detected and will make the photos look like they were taken in a bright environment.
According to these details revealed by Mishaal Rahman, developers will be able to learn more about this API through Android 16’s preview programme. The new feature is expected to be integrated into apps with the official release of Android 16 in June 2025.
