Instagram is working on a new feature that will allow users to come together around specific topics and create more interactive chat groups. This feature, called “Community Chat,” will allow users to have a Discord-like experience and bring people with similar interests under one roof.

Although it has not been officially announced yet, according to screenshots shared by developer Alessandro Paluzzi, Community Chats will consist of groups of up to 250 people. Users will be able to start a conversation around a specific topic and manage who can join the group. Group admins will also be able to delete messages and remove members from the group if necessary.

This feature will have a more interactive structure, unlike Instagram’s current “Broadcast Channels” feature. Broadcast Channels only allow content creators to communicate one-way with their followers, while in Community Chats, all participants will be able to join the conversation. However, it is stated that these groups will be subject to certain community rules in accordance with Meta’s content moderation policies.

Although there is no definitive information about when the feature will be available, it would not be a surprise if Instagram also added such an update, considering that Meta has previously added similar features to WhatsApp, Facebook and Messenger platforms. The company states that this feature is currently an internal prototype and has not yet been tested with external users.
