At the September event, Apple announced a new safety feature, Crash Detection, with the iPhone 14 and other devices. The tech giant improves its devices with new features like safety, privacy, and hardware. There are also other new features like satellite connectivity, as well as Crash Detection. Here are the details about the new iPhone 14 safety feature.
How does Crash Detection work?
The new safety feature is designed to detect car crashes via your iPhone. Your device can automatically call emergency services on your behalf if you have an accident and cannot respond to the warning. The Crash Detection feature uses most of the sensors of your iPhone to detect the crash.
Your iPhone or Apple Watch can detect a crash thanks to the motion sensor with a high dynamic range gyroscope and high-g accelerometer, GPS, barometer, microphone, and advanced motion algorithms while driving or you’re a passenger in a motor vehicle.
Your device shows an alert for 10 seconds when you have an accident. You can call the emergency services or cancel by swiping the screen for 10 seconds. However, a 10-second countdown will start when you don’t respond to the 10 seconds alert. When the time is up, your device will automatically call emergency services.
When your device connects to the emergency services, Siri will play audio on a loop with five seconds of silence between each replay. The audio says, “The owner of this iPhone was in a severe car crash and is not responding to their phone.” Then, Siri will send your estimated location with latitude and longitude and search radius to the emergency services.
Your device will play the audio with the loudest volume the first time it is played; then, it will reduce its volume in case you can speak to the services. Siri will replay the message until you tap the Stop Recorded Message or ends the call. Additionally, Siri will send your Medical ID information to your emergency contacts if you set emergency contacts up after another 10-second countdown.
Which devices support Crash Detection?
Apple explains the feature that your device can detect front impacts, side impacts, rear-end collisions, and rollovers. However, all Apple devices don’t support the new feature. Here is the list of supported devices:
- iPhone 14
- iPhone 14 Plus
- iPhone 14 Pro
- iPhone 14 Pro Max
- Apple Watch SE (2nd Generation)
- Apple Watch Series 8
- Apple Watch Ultra
How to Disable it?
If you don’t want to use the Crash Detection feature on your devices, you can turn it off by following these steps:
- Launch the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down and tap through to Emergency SOS.
- Under “Crash Detection,” toggle off the switch next to Call After Severe Crash.
