Apple’s next-generation flagship phones, the iPhone 18 Pro, are coming with a significant camera technology upgrade. Rumors suggest that only the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max will feature a variable aperture sensor, replacing the main wide-angle camera. This major upgrade aims to revolutionize depth and light control in mobile photography.
Details of the iPhone 18 Pro’s Variable Aperture Technology
Variable aperture technology allows the camera to automatically adjust the amount of light reaching the sensor. This technology offers significant advantages to users. For example, in dark environments, the aperture opens, allowing the sensor to take in more light. This allows for brighter and sharper photos. Furthermore, in extremely bright environments, the aperture closes, preventing overexposure.

Variable aperture also gives users greater control over depth of field. Depth of field determines how sharp the foreground object appears relative to the background. This allows for more aesthetically pleasing, professional-looking portraits and macro shots, as you can manually adjust the focus settings.
Apple has never used variable aperture on any iPhone model before. The company is moving forward with its plan to bring this technology to new phones and is in talks with suppliers about components. Giants like LG Innotech and Foxconn will manufacture the camera module. However, this technology was used by Samsung Electronics in the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S10 models in 2018 and 2019. Samsung abandoned this feature in 2020 due to rising costs and the increased thickness of the phone.
