Apple is taking a significant step to increase competition in the personal computer market. According to a new report, the company is preparing to launch an iPhone-powered MacBook in 2026. This move will be particularly appealing to consumers seeking affordable prices.
What will the iPhone-powered MacBook offer?
Apple’s affordable laptop, codenamed J700, is currently in active testing. According to a report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, early production has begun with suppliers abroad. This model is expected to be introduced in the first half of 2026. The iPhone-powered MacBook will cost well under $1,000 when it launches.

To lower the device’s price, Apple plans to use less advanced components. This means the laptop will be powered by an iPhone processor (A-series chip, likely the A18 Pro). The display will feature a lower-quality LCD panel. The screen will also be slightly smaller than the 13.6-inch display on the current MacBook Air.
With the launch of this new model, Apple aims to compete with Chromebooks and cheaper Windows laptops, particularly in education and budget-oriented markets. Gurman sees the new MacBook as an alternative to the iPad, with keyboard and trackpad accessories that could rival the MacBook Air. It seems likely to replace the M1 MacBook Air, currently available exclusively at Walmart for $649. If the company sells this device at a discounted price through its own stores and website, it would be a major shift from its current strategy.
