The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has seen the introduction of a plethora of new superheroes and supervillains in recent years, but many fans still yearn for the original characters who played an important role in shaping the franchise. Iron Man is one of them.
Robert Downey Jr. may return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Iron Man in a ‘multiverse’ story arc.
One of these beloved characters is Iron Man, played by Robert Downey Jr. According to a recent rumor, Downey Jr. has surprisingly agreed to reprise his iconic superhero role in the MCU.
Downey Jr. first donned the Iron Man suit in the 2008 film of the same name, laying the foundation for the expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe. Avengers: Endgame, Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, made the ultimate sacrifice to save the universe, which many believed would be the end of the character played by Downey Jr.
However, according to a studio insider with the Twitter handle @MyTimeToShineH, the story may not be over yet. Although the details are not yet known, the insider’s revelation has created a great deal of excitement among Marvel enthusiasts.
The announcement coincides with a recent report from Variety that talks are underway to bring back the original cast for an Avengers movie that would revisit characters like Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man and Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow, both of whom met their end in Endgame.
While the idea of resurrecting Tony Stark may seem far-fetched given his character’s final moments, the MCU has recently been immersed in the concept of the Multiverse. This narrative device allows for a variety of character variants to exist, paving the way for the return of beloved figures.
In addition, the Multiverse concept has made it easier to connect with previous Marvel adaptations in different continuities, including the Sam Raimi-directed Spider-Man trilogy and Fox’s X-Men films. While the specific direction of Downey Jr’s potential return remains unclear, the potential for such a return is undeniably present.
