It has been revealed that OpenAI is testing adding direct messaging (DM) and group chat features to its popular AI application, ChatGPT. Until now, ChatGPT, a platform where users interacted exclusively with AI, is transforming into a social platform that allows for human interaction with AI.
ChatGPT to Offer DMs
Clues confirming this development were discovered in the application code of ChatGPT’s Android version 1.2025.273 beta update. Software engineer Tibor Blaho stated in a post on the X platform that the DMs feature will allow users to communicate both one-on-one and in group chats.

It is not yet clear whether multiple GPTs will be able to participate in group chats. If multiple AIs are included, a useful addition could be that two different AI models will discuss, optimize, and present responses to users.
The direct messaging feature is in early development. It has been stated that users’ previous chat history or personal context information will not be included in DMs. No information has been released yet regarding encryption or privacy details regarding messaging. In addition to these new features, the app is also adding some profile customization options.
DMs may be made available for OpenAI to develop its own models. The new messaging features are believed to be inspired by OpenAI’s video creation and sharing app, Sora. Sora allows users to share AI-powered videos with friends, offering an experience similar to Instagram and TikTok.
