The world of AR/VR has evolved rapidly recently. Apple has stepped into this sector with Vision Pro, while Meta offers much more affordable Quest glasses. Sony is adapting virtual reality to the gaming world with its PlayStation VR device. A new patent received by the company shows that foot-controlled VR devices are on the way.
Sony’s foot-controlled VR patent
Sony wants to increase movement and immersion in augmented and virtual reality games. In this context, the company has filed a new patent application that reveals its plans for a foot-powered VR controller.
The patent applications include two different designs. One of them is in the form of a large ball, while the other stands out as a proximity-sensing touch-sensitive pad. Both work by being controlled by the user’s feet.
The ball-style controller can perform simple rotational movements through bearings inside the ball. Sensors in the device track the movement of the ball and transmit it to the game.
The touch pad features a curved surface that can detect nearby objects. This allows more complex controls to be performed with the foot. There is also an oscillator on the device that determines the distance for sensitivity adjustments.
Both VR devices have a built-in CPU and memory. This means they can send information directly to the AR/VR system for gameplay, while overcoming motion limitations.
It’s unclear whether Sony will manufacture these controllers. But patents that address foot controllers could usher in a new era of VR gaming without expensive setups like treadmills.
