While major tech companies are racing to build massive data centers for the next generation of artificial intelligence, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is looking even further ahead, planning to deploy gigawatt data centers in space.
Building a Data Center Won’t Even Take 20 Years
At Italian Tech Week 2025, Jeff Bezos was asked how the world might shape itself in the coming years. The billionaire mentioned his rocket company, Blue Origin, and then discussed his plans to build data centers in space.
In his speech, Jeff Bezos said, “It’s hard to say exactly when we’ll start building these massive gigawatt data centers in space. I estimate the process will take more than 10 years, but not more than 20. I’m quite confident about that. Building these massive training clusters in space will be more advantageous because we have 24/7 solar power there. There will be no obstacles like clouds, rain, or weather conditions. Within the next decade, we will be able to cover the costs of terrestrial data centers in space.” Presumably, the same data centers will be able to exchange data with each other via laser technology. However, launching these centers into orbit and operating them smoothly is not as easy as it seems. Jeff Bezos believes that Blue Origin will develop large, reusable rockets capable of carrying data centers into space in the future.
Predicting that space will not only have data centers but also people living there, Jeff Bezos added, “I believe that millions of people will be living in space within the next few decades. This process will progress so rapidly…”
So, what are your thoughts? Will it be possible to build data centers in space and have people living there in the coming years?
