Knights of the Old Republic (KotOR), the most beloved game in the Star Wars gaming universe, is coming back with a remake. A new trailer for the game was even released recently and gamers were very excited. However, the trailer was suddenly quietly removed by Sony. So people were worried about a possible cancellation.
Sony clarified the situation: The music in the KotOR remake trailer was removed because the license expired
This week, fans noticed that the post announcing a KotOR remake in 2021 had been deleted from the PlayStation Twitter account, and that the game’s teaser trailer had also been taken down.
This, coupled with media reports of the game’s troubled development, led to speculation that the game could be the latest victim of restructuring efforts by Aspyr’s parent company, Embracer Group.
Now Sony has issued a statement in response to the removal of social media posts about the KotOR remake, stating that it was due to the expiration of music licenses.
“As part of our normal business, we delist assets containing licensed music when the license expires,” a Sony spokesperson said.
As journalist Stephen Totilo points out, it’s a bit puzzling why music for an upcoming game would expire. Especially since the music in the trailer is from the Star Wars movies and not externally licensed.
A search of PlayStation’s YouTube account shows that many Star Wars game trailers from at least a decade ago are still listed as publicly available.
Star Wars: KotOR remake has reportedly been plagued with problems for the past few years. Bloomberg claimed last summer that Aspyr had stopped working on the game and that its future was uncertain.
Embracer previously confirmed that Saber Interactive was also working on the game, and some of Bloomberg’s sources said they believe Saber may have taken over development of the project entirely. What do you think? Please don’t forget to share your thoughts with us in the comments.
