LEGO was the first major toy company to announce a science-based emission reduction target in 2020. Now, it is taking that commitment even further. Annette Stube, LEGO’s head of sustainability, emphasized this determination by stating, “We want to lead in finding innovative solutions to the challenges we face.”
LEGO is partnering with Climeworks, a major carbon capture facility in Iceland. Climeworks’ “Orca” plant can filter about 4,000 tons of carbon dioxide directly from the air annually. This is one of LEGO’s significant steps towards reducing its carbon footprint.
Known for its plastic toys, LEGO is also striving to make its materials more eco-friendly. The company maintains recycling and reuse programs and is turning to sustainable alternatives like materials derived from sugarcane. Currently, 18% of the plastic used is not from petrochemical sources, and they are working to increase this percentage.
"Mammoth," the world's largest CO2 capture facility, has commenced operations in Iceland, cleaning up 36,000 tons of CO2 annually.
Additionally, new materials like arMABS and ePOM are noteworthy. arMABS is made from synthetic marble kitchen countertops, while ePOM blends CO2 obtained from renewable energy and biological waste. These materials clearly demonstrate LEGO’s serious commitment to environmental sensitivity and sustainability goals.
