In a shocking revelation, LetMeSpy, an Android phone surveillance application, has reported a severe data breach. Alarmingly, this incident has led to the unauthorized access and theft of sensitive user data across thousands of Android platforms.
Security Breach in Detail
The cybercriminals, through this attack, managed to obtain email addresses, telephone numbers, and even content from the message archives of user accounts. According to LetMeSpy’s announcement on its website, the breach occurred on June 21, 2023.
LetMeSpy, a product of the Polish company Radeal, swiftly alerted law enforcement and data protection authorities post-discovery of the breach. The company has currently suspended all account-related functionalities and is taking considerable steps to ensure user safety. The identity and motivations of the threat perpetrators are still shrouded in mystery.
About LetMeSpy
Offered as a monthly subscription, LetMeSpy was designed to enable customers to monitor others’ activities by merely installing the software on their devices. It was initially presented as a tool for parental or employee control.
The software offers extensive features, including the collection of call logs, SMS messages, and geolocations, all accessible from its website. Notably, the app icon could be concealed on the device’s home screen launcher to escape detection and removal.
As of January 2023, this stalkerware app had been employed to track 236,322 phones globally, collecting over 63.5 million text messages, 39.7 million call logs, and 43.2 million locations.
Scope of the Breach
Niebezpiecznik, a Polish security research blog, was the first to report the breach and analyze the stolen data. Interestingly, the findings suggest the theft includes around 26,000 email addresses, 16,000 SMS messages, and a comprehensive database of victims’ locations
A TechCrunch investigation of the leaked data indicates it dates back to 2013, aligning with LetMeSpy’s operational start. The records include data from at least 13,000 compromised devices, with a majority of the victims based in the U.S., India, and regions of Africa.
