The health-centric capabilities of the Apple Watch have proven invaluable yet again. This time, its Fall Detection feature has been lauded for saving two lives in separate incidents in Minnesota and Ohio.
Apple Watch turns hero in Minnesota
In a nerve-wracking event in Minnesota, Michael Brodkorb became the unwitting recipient of a hit-and-run. Unable to respond due to the impact, his Apple Watch promptly stepped in. Utilizing its Fall Detection feature, it dialled 911, thereby potentially saving his life. In addition, it also alerted his wife and children inside the house. Brodkorb, who suffered injuries to his ribs and tailbone, lauded his Apple Watch as a “life-saving tool.” The local police managed to track down the driver, a 17-year-old boy, whose fate currently hangs in the balance.
Following the incident, Brodkorb reached out to Apple CEO Tim Cook, who wished him a swift recovery.
Apple Watch’s timely intervention in Ohio
Over in Cincinnati, Ohio, the Apple Watch played a similar life-saving role. When 83-year-old William Fryer’s knees buckled while he was walking on the Ohio River Trail, his Apple Watch promptly detected the fall, called emergency services, and alerted his daughter. Cincinnati police and paramedics quickly arrived on the scene and transported Fryer to the hospital. Subsequent X-rays revealed an unobserved large blood clot, the cause of his sudden fall. Following its removal, Fryer expressed his gratitude for his Apple Watch’s timely assistance.
Activating the Fall Detection feature
The Fall Detection feature, lauded for its recent life-saving actions, can be activated through the Apple Watch iPhone app. Users need to navigate to Emergency SOS and toggle on the Fall Detection option. While the feature is automatically enabled for Apple Watch owners aged 55 and over, younger users can also manually activate it.
