Apple has begun testing MacBook Pro prototypes with the M3 Ultra chip. New codes that emerged in the developer version of iOS 18 show that Apple is testing the M3 Ultra processor in its portable computers. We may see a MacBook Pro with the M3 Ultra processor
The M3 Ultra chip has only been used in Mac Studio models so far. The processor, which offers support for a 32-core CPU, an 80-core GPU, and up to 512 GB of unified memory, stands out as the most powerful chip Apple has ever developed.
Testing this processor on the MacBook Pro reveals that Apple is pushing the limits of performance. However, using high-performance chips in portable devices brings with it important technical challenges such as cooling and battery life.
The J514d and J516d codes in the “/AppleInternal/Diags/Tests/” directory in the internal files of iOS 18 have a numbering structure similar to the current M3 Pro and M3 Max models. The letter “d” in these codes indicates that the desktop-class M3 Ultra processor is being tested in laptop devices.
The information that Apple is testing MacBook Pro prototypes with M3 Ultra chips does not mean that these models will be released in the near future.
